PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Census 2010 has reported that over 60% of AAs are immigrants with greater than 30% being limited English proficient. Having higher rates of foreign-born and limited English proficiency, it is not surprising that the rate of mental health service utilization is lowest among AAs than all other racial/ethnic groups. According to the annual report by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), only 6% of AAs age 18 years and older used mental health services in 2017 compared with 18% of non-Hispanic whites, though 14% of AA adults reported having a diagnosable mental or behavioral disorder. We will use a market-oriented Push-Pull-Infrastructure Model, community-based participatory approach, and social influence theory to guide our intervention development.
TARGET POPULATION:
Through CHAMP we will focus on the Asian American communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Chicago metropolitan area has the largest concentration of Asian Americans in the Midwest and the 6th largest in the U.S.

PROGRAM GOALS:
The goals of this project are to generate need/demand (pull) for mental health services among 7 Asian subgroups (Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Lao, South Asian, and Vietnamese), activate the community, and increase the capacity of the healthcare infrastructure to deliver culturally competent mental health services. Our organized approach will incorporate the mental health control continuum, from awareness to understanding, to intention to action, and from screening to linkage to care, with our ultimate goal being to reduce mental health care disparities and eliminate the unnecessary burden of mental illness among AA communities in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
